It’s International Women’s Day and to show our support, we are featuring some fantastic women across the Sugarman Group business every day this week.
Our colleagues are sharing their experiences of work, their inspirations and talking about their career journey.
Today we feature Amanda Hunt at Sugarman Australia.
What is your current role & what does it entail?
My current role is the Team Manager of Allied Health in the Sugarman Sydney office. A billing Manager, so whilst managing a team, contributing to the overall focus and profit. I also coach and support the team: understanding Allied Health market and being knowledgeable to discuss with clients and candidates: Negotiating with clients: Interviewing and supporting candidates: And having a handle on the profit and loss aspects of the business. It’s a varied interesting role that I enjoy.
Where did your career begin?
My career in recruitment began many moons ago, 15 years approx, whereby the famous reason “ I fell into recruitment” comes into play. I did start and partially complete a Psychology Degree however did not complete the final modules, whilst I had a full-time Recruitment role. I have achieved other courses since one being I gained Level 3 in Beauty Therapy passing with distinction. And I love doing wedding makeup at the weekends, although that has taken a back seat since moving to Australia, too busy Sup Boarding and checking out the scenery now. A great work life balance does exist.
How have you found being a woman, working in your sector?
In the beginning of my career, heavily male based however that has evened out over the years. Also varying in the recruitment sectors as I did start in the Finance and Engineering sector. Other than that, just normal business being a woman, as per normal.
Is enough being done in the UK/Australia to promote women in the workplace?
To promote woman in Uk and Australia, yes. I worked in the UK for Cordant People and then was sponsored over to the Sugarman Australia part of the business. I went from Senior Consultant to Team Manager in less than 17 months. And littered through our business some strong woman in high achieving roles.
What advice would you give someone looking to start working in your sector?
Lend yourself to the Sugarman Core Values. (Candour, Disruptive innovation, Collaboration, Relentlessness) and maintain a high integrity, professionalism and a good old fashioned thick skin. And you will be just fine, and go far.
Which women in the media inspire you?
Oprah Winfrey, Lady Gaga (Although detest her name, not that she would mind that)
Who has inspired you growing up/throughout your life?
My parents. My best friend. Teachers. Anyone who has persevered in the face of adversity and triumphed, and has done that continuously throughout life with their grace and empathy intact. Always face your head towards the sun, that way the shadows fall behind you!
