Building Independence: The Journey of Elm Tree Gardens

By Nathan Lloyd

27.05.2026

In January 2026, the opening of Elm Tree Gardens represented more than just the completion of a project; it marked the beginning of a new chapter for specialist care. Developed in partnership with Humber and North Yorkshire ICB and 54North Homes. This facility was born from a simple yet powerful mission: to create a space where individuals with complex needs don’t just reside, but truly live.

A Home Built for the Individual

The challenge was clear: how do we provide a high-security environment for those with Learning Disabilities, Autism, and Neurodivergent needs without it feeling clinical? The answer lies in the design of four bespoke bungalows. These aren’t standard units; they are homes equipped with “all mod cons,” including sustainable heat source pumps that ensure a comfortable, consistent environment regardless of the weather.

The layout was carefully considered to balance privacy with community:

  • Individual Havens: The site features two 2-bedroom and two 1-bedroom bungalows, allowing for living arrangements that suit the specific needs of each resident.
  • Connection to Nature: Every home has its own private garden and outdoor space, all centred around a large, open courtyard designed for safe, peaceful socialisation.
  • The Sensory Experience: Dedicated sensory spaces are woven into the environment to provide therapeutic support and emotional regulation.

Safety Behind the Scenes

At Elm Tree Gardens, safety is the foundation of freedom. We’ve integrated high-quality technology that works quietly in the background to keep everyone secure. This includes:

  • Seamless Access: High-quality fob and key-coded entry systems ensure safety without the need for intrusive traditional locking mechanisms.
  • Constant Support: An integrated SOS and roaming call system allows residents and staff to stay connected instantly, providing peace of mind across the entire site.
  • A Dedicated Staff Hub: To ensure support is always at hand, an on-site hub provides staff with their own kitchen-diner and sleep rooms, allowing them to remain close by while respecting the residents’ independence.

A Community-First Approach

Care at Elm Tree Gardens is never a “one size fits all” model. Each resident is supported by a core team of staff on a dedicated rota, ensuring that the faces they see every day are familiar and trusted.

Looking toward the future, the vision for this site goes beyond clinical outcomes. We are already planning for a community filled with life, from summer BBQs and garden parties to festive Christmas celebrations. It isn’t just about providing “specialist care”; it’s about creating a home where every individual has the opportunity to thrive, belong, and celebrate life’s milestones.
